The Burlington Community School District board approved a revised Burlington High School handbook on June 1 after administrators walked trustees through page-by-page changes affecting discipline, attendance and senior/junior privileges.
Presenters said the handbook will move to a stricter cell-phone/headphone rule next year: teachers will confiscate a phone and the device will be held in the office for the day (a "one-strike for the day" approach) instead of the current in-class or end-of-period consequence. Administrators also proposed a no-headphone policy in classrooms to reduce hidden device use.
High-school staff proposed giving juniors who meet academic and conduct thresholds an opportunity for an off-campus lunch during a roughly one-hour window created by new block scheduling; the trustees asked for details about how the district will notify students and parents and how the policy will be enforced. Administrators said juniors will need administrative approval and that students can instead use the library during that period.
The handbook also reworks tardy consequences to a quarterly basis (so students have a quicker reset mid-year) and clarifies credit-recovery options: students who earn between 35% and 59% on a trimester course can pursue unit-based recovery (aligned to Edgenuity) instead of repeating the entire class.
Trustees asked for clearer phrasing in several places (for example, removing ambiguous '+' notation for accumulated tardies and clarifying locker/parking language), requested that student appearance policy 502.1 be reviewed by the policy committee, and asked district staff to correct typos and enlarge key privacy/legal notices. The board approved the handbook with the discussed edits.
