Union County honors Haitian Flag Day committee; students recognized for performance and art

The Union County Board of County Commissioners used its agenda-setting session to issue three ceremonial recognitions, honoring a community cultural committee and several student groups.
The board presented a resolution recognizing the Haitian Flag Day Planning Committee of New Jersey for its work promoting Haitian heritage across the state. A representative of the committee thanked the board and noted the effort’s longevity: "Over 20 years ago, they started this wonderful initiative to honor Haitian culture," the representative said, adding the group’s work has benefited communities in Elizabeth, throughout Union County and the state.
The board also invited members of the Union County Vocational Technical School acapella group to perform. Commissioners praised the students’ performance and presented certificates to the group and their teachers; the board asked Superintendent Gwendolyn Ryan and identified teachers to step forward to receive the honors.
Finally, the board recognized students whose artwork was included in the New Jersey Performing Arts Center exhibitions. Commissioner James Baker said he was impressed by the students’ talent and by the breadth of participation. Several student names were read into the record and honored by the board.
The presentations concluded without formal debate. The chair then transitioned the meeting into the regular agenda for consideration of department resolutions and other business.
