The Public Safety Committee reviewed a proposal to partner with Charleston County EMS to provide station-based ambulance coverage from Fire Station 1 (30 J.C. Long) and voted to recommend moving forward. Staff said the county is shifting to a station-based deployment model and is exploring adding ambulances East of the Cooper; the proposed arrangement would allow Charleston County EMS personnel to sleep at the station and would increase EMS footprint year-round rather than just from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Chief Alvarez said the city has the physical space to support the expanded deployment and that the arrangement would improve response coverage and provide opportunities for joint training. The committee voted in favor to recommend approval and asked staff and chief to explore configurations and details with Charleston County EMS.
