The Village of Shorewood Hills Board of Trustees on Feb. 24 unanimously approved a conditional use permit for the University of Wisconsin’s WIMR cyclotron project at 1111 Highland Ave.
Administrator Brian Mooney summarized the project for trustees and Aaron Williams of UW–Madison joined virtually to explain technical and siting details. Trustees discussed that the permit would apply to roughly one half of the building because the site sits between two municipal jurisdictions and noted the Plan Commission had reviewed the project over the past year.
Trustees voted on the motion to approve the conditional use permit on a roll-call vote; the motion carried 7–0 (Carol Barford, Dietmar Bassuner, Bob Falk, Mark Lederer, Shabnam Lotfi, Kate Ullsvik, and John Imes all voting yes). The Board did not attach additional amendments at the meeting and referred remaining jurisdictional coordination to staff and the Plan Commission where appropriate.
The approval follows Plan Commission review that trustees said began in 2024. No legal challenges, ordinance citations, or binding conditions beyond the nine conditions noted in the packet were added at the Board meeting. The Board’s action allows UW and municipal staff to proceed with next steps in permitting and intergovernmental coordination.
The Board’s meeting packet and the Plan Commission record retain the stated nine conditions associated with the permit; trustees said staff will continue coordination with UW and neighboring jurisdictions.
