Shiocton trustees postpone decision on homeowner’s variance request

The Village Board of Trustees of the Village of Shiocton on Dec. 19 postponed consideration of a variance request from resident Rick Samz that would allow a 5-foot side-yard setback so his new house would align with an existing driveway.
Clerk Laurie Sweeney summarized the request during a public hearing. Sweeney reported that Samz, who was unable to attend because of the weather, told her the work would require about 24 inches of fill. Sweeney said she contacted Samz by phone and relayed that figure to the board. Public works official Conradt told the board that, given a frost wall and a crawl space, he did not expect fill would be needed.
The board pressed for more detail about drainage and potential impacts on neighboring properties if fill were brought in, and asked whether the state Department of Transportation had been consulted about moving the driveway. Trustees said they wanted documentation clarifying the fill and a drainage plan before acting on the variance.
Trustee Dawes moved to adjourn the public hearing and reconvene the regular meeting; Trustee Tyler seconded and the motion passed. Later, on the agenda item to approve, postpone or deny the variance, Trustee Dawes moved and Trustee Bunnell seconded a motion to postpone the decision until Samz and DPW Conradt could provide additional information; that motion passed.
The board, chaired by Village President Jennifer Schmoock, adjourned the December meeting at 4:50 p.m. The trustees asked Sweeney to request updated information from the applicant and documentation from DOT if a driveway relocation is under consideration. No formal approval or denial of the variance was made; the matter will return when the requested materials are provided.
