Sterling board told water filtration project may be delayed and exceed $5 million but grant should cover cost

Sterling’s Revenue Collector told the Board of Selectmen on July 1 that the town’s planned water filtration system faces a short delay and a possible cost increase but that grant funding should cover the higher price. Judith Stumpo said the state contract differs from original expectations and is likely to cause a one- to two-month delay.
"The state of Connecticut’s contract is different than originally planned, causing a 1–2-month delay & may be over the $5 million but should be covered by the grant," Stumpo said. She told the board town staff will issue a Request for Qualifications to recruit engineering firms for the project’s construction.
Selectmen did not vote on the filtration contract at the meeting; Stumpo’s remarks were recorded as an update under New Business and staff indicated they will proceed with the RFQ process to identify qualified firms.
