Spokane Police seek nearly $500,000 grant to sustain domestic-violence firearm‑relinquishment program

He said the department is also requesting about $250,000 to cover officer overtime for serving court‑issued gun‑relinquishment orders in the community.
"In 2025, we were able to surrender about 808 firearms from the Spokane County area," Jensen told the committee, adding that the program partners with the YWCA and that, in 2025, the department recorded zero domestic‑violence firearm‑related homicides.
Council members asked about administrative overhead. Cole (Wicker) said the team is negotiating de‑minimis versus an indirect rate; if the de‑minimis is used, overhead would be roughly 10–15 percent of the award, though staff‑time‑heavy grants can show higher negotiated indirect rates.
Jensen said the grant would also fund overtime for detectives for background checks and additional evidence‑facility time to handle increased firearms processing; the presentation emphasized continuity of the YWCA partnership and sustaining program gains.
The committee did not vote; Jensen indicated the team plans to submit the application and will provide additional data if requested.
