The Putnam Valley Town Board opened a public hearing to consider amending its local law on veterans property tax exemptions and agreed to delay final action while staff compiles estimates of eligibility.
Board members noted the seriously disabled veterans exemption is tied to a percentage of disability rather than a dollar amount and said relatively few residents qualify. One board member said, "I know we have two, that I know of," as an example of the small eligible population; members asked staff to attempt to determine how many veterans in town might meet the criteria before the board votes.
Because the filing and qualification processes for veterans exemptions can require separate documentation, the board discussed that eligible veterans may need a separate filing to establish the benefit. The board agreed to suspend the hearing until next Wednesday to consolidate the veterans review with the senior-exemption fiscal analysis.
No final votes or changes to the veterans exemption were made at this meeting; staff is expected to present estimates of likely eligibility at the next meeting.
