Board denies sketch plan for King David Cemetery entrance, refers sign setback to zoning board

The Putnam Valley Planning Board voted on Aug. 25 to deny a sketch plan for proposed work at Beverly Hills King David Cemetery and directed the applicant to seek a setback variance from the zoning board.
Tim Allen of Biddle Associates told the board the revised plan simplifies work to removing a collapsed retaining wall and regrading the slope; the previously proposed grave-site expansions were removed. The board identified a setback variance for a new entrance sign and suggested the applicant proceed to the zoning board’s meeting on Aug. 28 before returning for a planning-board public hearing. "This plan has been extremely simplified since then," Allen told the board.
In discussion, a member of the public and board members also raised a traffic-safety issue: the signal on Church Street near the cemetery has been out for some time, and one attendee said egress from the cemetery can be dangerous when the light does not function. The board recommended the applicant resolve the setback variance through the zoning board and return to planning with the zoning decision and required permits.
The board’s motion to deny the sketch plan and refer the sign setback to the zoning board carried on a voice vote.
