Council OKs Safe Streets for All planning contract, citing $160,000 grant and $40,000 local match

The Augusta City Council voted July 6 to approve a professional services agreement with JEO Consulting Group to prepare a Safe Streets for All (SS4A) action plan for the city.
City Manager Josh Shaw and consultant Brad Shores said the planning contract will analyze the city’s pedestrian and multimodal network, identify safety problems and produce a plan that can support competitive implementation grants. Staff told council the SS4A grant awarded to Augusta is about $160,000 and that the city’s local match—already budgeted—is approximately $40,000.
Shores said the federal grant pays roughly 80% of the planning work and that producing a robust plan is required before the city can apply for competitive implementation funding. He also described a scope that includes public engagement, committee work, fact-finding and project identification.
Council members urged the plan to include school routes and other areas of high pedestrian use; staff and the consultant said the plan can be systemwide while allowing the city to target priority areas such as school zones and the Redbud Trail.
A motion to approve the professional services agreement with JEO Consulting Group, not to exceed $200,000, and authorize the city manager to execute the agreement was seconded and carried.
