Williamson council approves plant bid for botanical garden and hears updates on amphitheater, Little Street setbacks

The Williamson City Council moved forward on several parks and development items, accepting a plant bid for the Williamson Botanical Garden and reviewing status updates on the amphitheater and local property setbacks.
Council reviewed Country Estate’s design and pricing for the Williamson Botanical Garden and Memorial Park, which includes perennial plantings described as safe for children and pets and a Williamson-named daylily. The council voted to obtain written or verbal quotes for grading and irrigation work and accepted Country Estate’s plant bid (motion CB/SL 5-0). A special meeting was called for June 11 to receive quotes.
Councilmember Stephen Levin said the amphitheater is an asset that can host concerts and movies; staff reported construction is ahead of schedule with estimated completion in roughly two to two-and-a-half weeks.
On Little Street, members discussed that many existing homes do not conform to current setback rules. A new owner demolished a previous structure and trees on the lot prevent meeting current setback requirements. The planning commission is authorized to grant variances, but the city attorney recommended amending the code to make the council the issuing authority for variances and to create districts for planning commission posts. Council reviewed the text-amendment process and discussed creating an overlay district for Little Street and 2nd District.
The council did not adopt any zoning amendments at this meeting; staff and the planning commission will continue work on requests and the proposed code changes.
