The Isle of Palms Public Safety Committee on Feb. 3 voted to approve replacing seven sets of turnout gear for the fire department and to forward the purchase to full council for final approval. Chief Olivares said the purchase is budgeted but exceeds the staff approval threshold, so the committee needed to consider it.
"They were approved budget funds, for us to purchase these seven sets," Chief Olivares said, noting a few boots are part of the order. Committee chair John moved to approve the purchase and to take the item to council; a member seconded and a voice vote recorded ayes.
Staff characterized the purchase as replacing worn-out gear and said it was contemplated in the budget, but that the price exceeded the department head authority level. Committee members asked questions about scope and confirmed the amount is budgeted.
The committee’s action is procedural: it approved forwarding the purchase to the full council for final authorization. The council will consider the procurement and any required procurement notices or documentation per city policy at a future meeting.
Next step: council consideration of the turnout-gear purchase; the committee did not set a council date at the meeting.
