Newburgh opens Delano Hitch Aquatic Center; council hears citywide updates

The City of Newburgh this week celebrated the opening of the Delano Hitch Aquatic Center and the council heard a broad municipal update covering public safety, public works and community programs.
Mike Kneppel, the mayor's chief of staff, described the ribbon-cutting and said the aquatic center is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, with Mondays reserved for maintenance. "The new state-of-the-art Delano Hitch Aquatic Center is officially open for the season," Kneppel said, and the city is offering resident season passes (family of four: $85) before sales open to the general public on June 23.
Kneppel also reported preliminary Part 1 crime figures for the first quarter (Jan. 1'Apr. 30), saying the city has seen an 18% decrease in Part 1 crimes compared with the same period in 2024, including a roughly 10% drop in violent crime and a 21% decrease in property crime. DPW updates noted April volumes (about 853 tons of solid waste and 92 tons of recyclables), the installation of a dock at the Washington Street boat launch to improve Hudson River access, and repairs and upgrades at Unico Park restrooms and grounds.
Council members used the general-comments portion of the meeting to press for additional neighborhood safety measures linked to parks and schools. Council member Martinez, who described tenant-rights resources during council remarks, welcomed the Environmental Justice Fellows' focus on tree-planting; council members said they are pursuing crosswalks and speed-trailer deployments through the transportation committee.
The manager's presentation also outlined community-engagement items including the summer movie contest and an upcoming Pride flag-raising on June 1. The meeting record shows multiple summer events will be managed by city staff and community partners.
