Edmore council approves auto-parts sales use in B-2 district, schedules budget workshop

The Village of Edmore Council on Jan. 12 unanimously found that retail sale of auto parts is of the same general character as other permitted uses in the B-2 Highway Business District, clearing the way for a national auto-parts retailer to pursue the former Dollar General building in town.
Councilmember McParland moved to make the finding and was supported by Pierce; a roll-call vote was 7-0 in favor. The council’s decision means the proposed use is allowed under the local zoning classification described in meeting materials as the B-2 Highway Business District.
Also on the Jan. 12 agenda, President Chet Guild moved, and Moore supported, setting the FY 2026/2027 budget workshop for Monday, Jan. 26, 2026, at 7:00 p.m.; the voice vote was unanimous.
In departmental reports preceding those actions, Village Manager Mark Borden described a series of Department of Public Works equipment issues: a tractor with a tire defect that Discount Tire could not repair (the manager said the plan is to purchase one new tire now and another in the 2026/2027 budget), a dump truck whose transmission failed and is being replaced with a refurbished unit, and an aging VAC truck from the 1990s. Borden said staff found a 2012 Vactor truck in Grand Rapids priced at $87,500, that the dealer has full service records, and that the village intends to test-drive the vehicle; if an internal approver authorizes it, staff will send a letter of intent to hold the truck until March when purchase funding can be included in the 2026/2027 budget. The manager noted a brand-new replacement VAC truck would cost approximately $500,000 to $800,000.
Treasurer Shirley Drain reported that the December 2025 books are closed and balanced and that all ELF loans are current. The council approved payment of the bills on Colburn’s motion, supported by Griswold (roll-call vote 7-0). The council also approved the Dec. 8, 2025 minutes on McParland’s motion, supported by Kanine (voice vote 7-0). The meeting adjourned at 8:07 p.m.
What’s next: the council’s budget workshop is scheduled for Jan. 26 and the next regular meeting is Feb. 9, 2026.
