Officials describe Bass River dredge pilot, material reuse and funding concerns

Regional Administrator Michael Dutton reported to the Assembly on June 3 that the commission has approved a Bass River dredging pilot project and is exploring whether dredged materials can be used for habitat restoration and island rebuilding along the coast.

"This could be an opportunity for our dredge to use dredged materials for habitat restoration and rebuilding of some of the disintegrated island systems that are used for coastal protection," Dutton said, and noted staff are considering a relatively inexpensive spray distribution attachment to apply dredged spoils.

Delegates expressed concern about long‑term dredge funding if state aid is reduced. Dutton said the commission is cautiously optimistic that an environmental bond bill coming before the General Court could include funding for dredge needs and related capital items; he emphasized continued advocacy by the Cape delegation and towns.

A delegate asked for a firm cost estimate for the proposed sprayer; Dutton said he did not have the exact figure at the meeting but would obtain it.
