Students collect more than 2,200 pounds of plastic for school bench through service-learning program

Students and staff told the Big Lake board that a district service-learning class partnered with NexTrex and local organizations to collect plastic that was converted into a school bench.
Karen Dunkel introduced Kyla Green and other student participants to explain the project. The team said they partnered with NexTrex, the Lions Club and local businesses such as Coburns and ran collection drives across trimesters. "The final tally was 2,277 pounds of plastic total," the students reported.
Presenters described a multi-trimester effort—research, planning, poster and digital outreach, weekly collection and coordination with NexTrex and community partners—and noted the bench and civic engagement were central goals. Board members and attendees praised the student leadership and encouraged others to check the bench near the school.
The presentation emphasized environmental learning, partnerships with local business and civic groups, and student leadership skills developed through the project.
