Millcreek AFJROTC unit honored as a top program; cadets describe service and leadership gains

Major Nygaard and members of the Millcreek Township School District’s AFJROTC unit were recognized during the district’s committee meetings on June 8, with administrators and board members praising cadet achievement and community service.

Major Nygaard, invited to the dais by district administrators, said the unit received the Distinguished Unit with Merit award — "the highest award that headquarters Air Force Junior ROTC can give" — and that the unit is also being considered for the Silver Star Community Service with Excellence Award, which he said is given to about 5% of the roughly 812 AFJROTC units worldwide. He credited instructors and family support while spotlighting cadet contributions.

Multiple cadets addressed the board. One cadet, identified in the transcript as the corps commander for the 2026–27 school year, described community service as meaningful and motivating. Another cadet said the program helped them gain confidence and leadership skills; a third, who identified themself as Cadet Stone, said ROTC ‘‘helped me…come out of my shell’’ after moving to Pennsylvania.

Board members and the superintendent offered praise: one board member called the honors ‘‘overwhelming and very awesome,’’ and an administrator said the AFJROTC program is among the district’s top offerings. The recognition item was presented as information (no district action was required) and concluded with an invitation for questions; none were raised.

The recognition highlights the district’s extracurricular strengths heading into the close of the 2025–26 school year; the board noted graduation for the class of 2026 is scheduled for June 22.
