Bloomington board schedules ordinance rewrite and alternative-side parking signs after winter issues

Chief Small told the board Jan. 5 that parking enforcement problems emerged after recent snowfall and recommended a switch to alternative-side parking with signs posted this year and enforcement beginning next winter. The board asked Chief Small to work with Clerk Atterbury and the village attorney to draft revised snow-removal and parking ordinances for review at a future meeting.
Chief Small also reported that no-parking signs have been ordered for Union Street near apartments to ensure emergency-vehicle access and that parking signs were ordered to help enforce the 48-hour parking rule. The board indicated it wants clearer, more-aligned rules with neighboring municipalities.
Clerk/Treasurer Shawna Atterbury raised concerns about negative and personal comments on a recent village Facebook post related to snow shoveling. The board agreed to discuss the social-media policy with Chief Small at the next meeting and to turn off comments on the village Facebook page in the meantime.
The board did not change ordinances at the Jan. 5 meeting; members directed staff to draft language and return with proposed ordinance text for formal consideration.
