The Village of Big Bend board voted to authorize staff to pursue health insurance coverage for full‑time employees, endorsing further work to enroll on or about Nov. 1 and to include the cost in next year’s budget. A packet from Matthew Larson of UnitedHealthcare was on the table; board members discussed plan options and estimated costs.
Committee member (speaker 3) described the proposal as a plan with an employer/employee split of roughly 75% / 25% and cited an annual plan cost of about $54,000, which would leave the village’s share at about $40,000. The committee member told the board he had sought alternatives including the county pool but ultimately pursued small‑business options that produced competitive rates. Staff emphasized that the plan would cover full‑time employees and dependents under the terms discussed.
Board members framed the decision as part of recruitment and retention: one speaker said the availability of health coverage "would go a long way" toward finding and keeping quality staff. The board moved, seconded and approved a motion authorizing staff to proceed with pursuing coverage and preparing final figures for formal budget consideration.
Officials set a budget timeline: preliminary budgets are due to be finalized by Oct. 17 for posting, followed by a public hearing before the November village board meeting; staff will return with more paperwork and plan details next month. The board’s authorization at the meeting was to proceed with obtaining quotes and information, not final enrollment.
