Chickasaw County receives DNR approval to trial shutdown landfill leachate system

The Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors received and filed a June 24, 2026 letter from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources approving a proposed two-year trial shutdown of the leachate collection system at the Chisholm County sanitary landfill.
Chair read the DNR letter to the board and summarized its terms: the plan calls for a two-year trial shutdown, monthly monitoring of the leachate tank level, inspection of leachate lines and vaults, and a requirement that the county provide the DNR with a summary report and decommissioning plans no later than July 14, 2028. "DNR approves this plan as written," the chair read.
The board moved to receive and file the letter; the motion by Travis, second by Scott, passed on a roll call of four ayes with one absence.
