Police Chief Brandon Leschke presented department activity at the Jan. 19 Weyauwega Common Council meeting, summarizing December statistics and training updates.
Leschke said the department handled 256 calls for service in December, including 12 traffic citations, 12 written traffic warnings, five municipal ordinance citations, four reportable motor vehicle crashes and one use of force. He reported the department received a grant from TC Energy to purchase a trailer for Fatal Vision presentation equipment and child car-seat presentation equipment. Leschke also said SRO Devin Meeuwsen completed his training process.
Councilmember Shani Appleby asked whether the City is being compensated for crossing guard duties; Leschke said Public Works employee Burger covers Monday and Friday morning shifts and the Police Department/SRO covers Tuesday through Thursday mornings, and that the school is still looking for someone to fill the position. The transcript records that the City is only covering the morning shift; no compensation arrangement with the school was recorded.
Leschke noted staff continue winter parking enforcement and that Public Works is occupied with snow plowing and cleanup. No formal council directive or funding request tied to the grant or staffing issue was recorded in the meeting minutes.
