Committee staff summarized widespread storm damage across parks and cemeteries on July 8, telling members they had lost roughly nine trees in Haven Park (six were medium to large), three Norway maples and a large weeping willow in Wentworth/Pleasant Street Cemetery, and several other significant trees in Langdon Park and near tennis/pickleball courts.
Staff said contractors (Knowles) and city crews addressed much of the debris and that the work was largely completed by the prior weekend. Members and residents noted heavy public interest during cleanup and photos being taken inside taped‑off areas; staff urged caution and explained that the contractor removed large hazards for safety.
Several members proposed taking this clearing as an opportunity to develop a coordinated redesign for Haven Park—suggestions included professional landscape planning to open sightlines to the Fitz John Quarter monument, rethinking the off‑leash dog area, and planting a mix of species that fit the park’s use and maintenance needs. Staff said they would bring preliminary ideas to the next conversations and work with colleagues responsible for park design.
Staff reiterated that replanting will be phased and coordinated with community input and that some removals were necessary for immediate public safety. The committee asked staff to present a design/planting plan for review when available.
