The Mamaroneck Board of Education adopted an updated districtwide emergency management plan on Tuesday after a public hearing in which a parent urged the district to strengthen guidance for students with disabilities.
Elizabeth Hanaway, who identified herself as a parent and a trained ADA coordinator, told the board the current draft addresses students with disabilities in a single bullet on page 25 of a 34‑page plan. She recommended clearer direction on who develops individualized emergency plans, internal administrative guidance for principals, CSE teams and nurses, and a possible ADA‑aligned addendum that could reference New York State Education Department guidance.
Board members thanked Hanaway for her recommendations. A board speaker noted that buildings maintain more detailed, student‑specific plans and said administrators would follow up on Hanaway’s suggestions. The chair then called for a motion; a board member moved to adopt the plan and the board adopted the updated emergency management plan by voice vote (tally not specified).
Board members emphasized the distinction between districtwide, high‑level policy and more detailed building‑level plans, saying the administrative and building teams maintain student‑specific emergency procedures. The board did not publish a vote tally in the meeting transcript; minutes or a roll‑call record will show the formal record when posted.
