Veterinary emergency center seeks sign variances; board questions 24-hour illumination

Michael Santalucro of Sand Signs appeared for a veterinary specialty and emergency center at 566 East Boston Post Road and requested multiple variances for signage, awning lettering and illuminated channel letters to serve a 24/7 emergency facility.
Santalucro said the center operates around the clock and that signage and illumination are necessary so clients can find the facility during emergencies and when traveling from outside the immediate area. He described face-lit channel letters and painted awnings with logos and said the lighting would be oriented toward Boston Post Road and not the residential neighborhoods behind the site.
Board members asked specifically whether the application sought a variance for illumination during the code’s off hours (the code language cited at the hearing requires signs to be off after specified hours). The applicant said the application included illuminated signs and that the client would abide by the board’s directive if required; one representative offered midnight as a compromise if the board insisted on an off time. Members also clarified the number of sign elements (the applicant counted the main wall sign and four awning lettering elements and described placement on elevations).
No public speakers objected during the hearing. A motion was made and seconded to close the public hearing, and the board closed the matter unanimously; the variance request will return for board consideration with the record closed.
