Board approves district banking resolutions, hires staff and reviews athletic finances

On old business, S3, a staff member, summarized two documents required to move the district to its own banking model: a funds-and-investment resolution and a County Treasurer Agreement that would keep tax collection with the county while allowing the district to receive a lump-sum transfer and manage its own accounts. "If you approve, you would need to approve the resolution ... and then the agreement," S3 said, noting the change could be implemented beginning July 1 of the next fiscal year. The board moved and voted to approve both resolutions; the chair recorded that the motions passed.
The board then reviewed an athletics expenses and revenue report. S3 said volleyball finished the season with a roughly $9,777 deficit but noted improvements from the prior year; football and other fall sports showed smaller shortfalls and the district collected about $14,200 in activity fees for the period. S3 explained coaching stipends are funded from the general fund, while gate and activity revenue flow to athletics accounts, and cautioned winter sports and wrestling typically increase seasonal deficits despite new cost savings from 12- and 15-passenger vans.
Under new business the board approved hiring two middle-school girls' basketball coaches, Carrie Sinkre and Megan Johnson, after a motion and second. The board also approved hiring paraprofessional Alex Carr to expand hours in an occupational-therapy aid role; S3 noted she had already begun working in that capacity. The board approved elementary and high-school claims and accounts in separate motions before adjourning.
Why it matters: switching to district banking could change how the district reconciles accounts and invests funds; the resolutions authorize the process but require county acceptance. The athletics report highlights continuing budget pressures that the district says are only partly offset by fee changes and reduced busing costs.
Next steps: S3 said the banking change would not take effect until the next fiscal year (July 1). The board did not record additional directives on athletics in this meeting.
