Weyauwega council approves $275,105.42 in payments, zoning change and library appointments

Weyauwega — The Common Council of the City of Weyauwega on Jan. 20 approved a package of routine administrative measures, including authorization of $275,105.42 in payments for December, a rezone of a Mill Street property and two Library Board appointments.
In a roll call vote on the financial report and checks dated Dec. 1–31, 2024, councilors Meta Berg, Pat Gorchals, Chris Gunderson, Shani Appleby and Austin Baehnman voted to approve payments totaling $275,105.42 and accepted the monthly financial statements. The Finance Committee also won approval for a 60-day waiting period for replacing lost checks and for a quote from Office Outfitters to furnish the treasurer's office.
The council approved updated job descriptions for the City Clerk, City Treasurer and Administrative Assistant as presented at Finance Committee; no changes were made before the council vote.
On land use, the council approved a zoning change requested by Jon Dahlke to reclassify 200 S Mill Street from B-1 General Business to R-1 Single- and Two-Family Residential District (motion by Meta Berg, second by Shani Appleby). The motion carried with five ayes.
The council authorized a temporary retailer’s license for Weyauwega Duck Unlimited to sell at the Waupaca County Fairgrounds on Feb. 13, 2025 (motion by Chris Gunderson, second by Shani Appleby). The Recreation Committee’s recommendation to approve the Spielbauer Fireworks quote for 2025 also passed; council instructed staff to secure a new agreement that includes the vendor covering DJ services and entertainer Frankie Moscato.
Council accepted the resignation of Council Member Cameron Looker (motion by Shani Appleby, second by Chris Gunderson) and appointed Nick Gunderson and Shani Appleby to the Library Board to replace Jerry Poltrock and Frank Zaboj (motion by Austin Baehnman, second by Chris Gunderson). Shani Appleby had reported earlier that the Library Board is finishing year-end paperwork, will celebrate Frank Zaboj on Tuesday and encouraged residents to tour the facility’s new addition.
Public Works matters included a council recommendation that Police Chief Brandon Leschke continue as acting Public Works Supervisor. Chief Leschke also reported a water break on E Sumner Street and said repairs are scheduled for Thursday because of extreme cold; residents reportedly have reduced water pressure in the interim. The mayor, Rich Luedke, noted the severe cold and said he hoped there would be no further water breaks.
The council set its February calendar with committee meetings on Feb. 11 and the next Common Council meeting on Feb. 17, 2025, then adjourned at 6:40 p.m.
