Weyauwega sets Swim Lake opening for June 7, delays evening lessons amid lifeguard shortage

The Weyauwega Common Council voted May 18 to open the city Swim Lake for the season on Sunday, June 7, after the Recreation Committee reported a shortage of lifeguard applicants.
Committee members told the council the department had received five lifeguard applications and had sufficient applicants for office and concession positions. The committee and council discussed opening logistics and recommended opening on June 7 to allow setup time after the school year ends. Summer school swim lessons are scheduled to start June 8; the school’s last day is June 5.
Councilmember Shani Appleby moved, seconded by Kesha Butzin, to open the Swim Lake for the season on June 7 with weekday hours of 12:30–4 p.m. (with lifeguard) and 4–8 p.m. as swim-at-own-risk when no lifeguard is on duty; weekend hours were set at 11 a.m.–4 p.m. (with lifeguard) and 4–8 p.m. swim-at-own-risk. The motion passed with six ayes.
Appleby and Butzin also moved and passed a measure to delay evening lessons until possibly July while the city assesses lifeguard availability. Council members noted the operation will depend on hiring additional lifeguards before expanding lesson hours.
