Board hears first review of Amplify ELA Grade 6–8 pilot and first reading of AI policy

The Hamburg Area School District board held first reviews on two instructional and policy items at its May 11 meeting.
Chief Learning Officer Teresa Freiwald introduced a first review of the Amplify ELA Grade 6–8 materials. Freiwald said curriculum materials would be available in the district office for board members and community review. Two pilot teachers, identified in the minutes as Ms. Oswald and Mrs. Fitzpatrick, shared classroom experiences and student writing samples from their pilot of the program.
Separately, the board conducted a first review of proposed Policy 815.1, “Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Education.” The minutes record the policy as a first review item; there was no motion or vote to adopt the policy at the May 11 meeting. The district indicated the policy would return for additional consideration at a future meeting.
Both items were presented for information and will proceed through the district’s normal review and adoption process: the Amplify ELA materials are available in the District Office for review, and Policy 815.1 remains at first reading with no recorded action on May 11.
