School board approves revised expulsion policy and new rules for parent organizations

The Florence School District 5 Board of Trustees voted to adopt a revised student expulsion policy and a separate policy setting requirements for parent organizations during its September meeting.
Chair (speaker 2) introduced the second reading of policy JKE and its regulation JKE‑R, described by a board member (speaker 1) as a wording change to align the district with the model policy. Board member (speaker 6) moved to approve the second reading and a voice vote was taken; the board voted in favor.
The board also approved a new regulation, KBE‑R, which the board described as setting procedures for relations with parent organizations and booster clubs. A speaker explaining the policy said it requires background checks for volunteers who handle money. A motion to adopt KBE‑R was moved and seconded and approved by voice vote.
In addition to the two policy votes, trustees approved two overnight student trips (an FCA retreat and the Junior State Beta Club convention) after a motion and voice vote in favor, and accepted recommended CTE textbook adoptions for accounting, personal finance/marketing and sports medicine courses using publishers National Geographic Learning and Cengage. The academic presenter noted the district commonly uses National Geographic and HMH and that several CTE textbooks were being adopted proactively so the district can order them quickly if programs resume or expand.
The board also conducted the routine selection of a delegate and alternate for the South Carolina School Boards Association (SCSBA) assembly in Charleston and approved nominations by voice vote.
The board briefly entered executive session and, on returning, Chair (speaker 2) announced that there was no action to report. The meeting then adjourned.
