Wind Lake board begins 2026 weed-control planning; directs contractor and buoy follow-ups

At its Feb. 3 meeting, the Wind Lake Management District board began preparations for the 2026 weed-management season, identifying key needs and assigning follow-up tasks.
Board members said they need to confirm a harvest manager, coordinate with a staffing agency and clarify the availability and role of a potential organizer identified as Jerry Kotarak. The board asked that the item remain on future agendas while staff and members make outreach; members also listed Ron Mayer as an alternative contact if Kotarak is unavailable.
On chemical abatement, County Representative Joe Bellante recommended continuing the district's past relationship with Lake and Pond (Solitude). Secretary Jeremy Sauld moved that Bellante contact Solitude to obtain information about renewing the 2026 contract and present options at the next meeting; Treasurer Todd Flunker seconded. The motion carried 5-0.
The board also discussed last year's purchase of two lighted buoys and the possibility of buying more. Members agreed to contact the Norway Police Department to determine what funding is budgeted for buoy replacement and to identify replacement needs; Secretary Sauld volunteered to make that inquiry.
Next steps for the board include contacting the named individuals for harvest-manager availability, receiving contractor information from Bellante about chemical abatement, and reporting back at the March meeting so the board can finalize pre-season arrangements.
