Director reports rising tourism, commencements and a new intern at the Corn Palace

During the director's report, the Director said the Corn Palace gift shop is "officially on the floor of the Corn Palace," and that bus tours and tourists are arriving for the season. The Director said Mondays have been busy and that "we have, I think, about a 100 buses booked this summer," noting additional tours sometimes arrive without notice.
The Director reviewed recent commencements that used the venue, naming "Dakota Wesleyans, Mitchell High, and then 3 from MTI" and said the events worked out well though attendance was slightly down from a year earlier. The Director said staff are considering moving some commencements back to April in future years to avoid scheduling conflicts.
The Director said an intern named Gretchen has started; she is "doing a she's a marketing and, graphic design major" from SDSU and will help with social media, promotions for the Corn Palace and Corn Palace Festival, and other projects tied to parks and tourism. Staff are also pursuing grant opportunities for fall and shoulder-season events, the Director said.
The Chair noted there were no questions from the board following the report and the meeting proceeded to a motion to enter executive session.
