The Franklin Lakes Board of Education voted July 25 to appoint Christine Voorhees as Director of Special Services and Counseling for the Franklin Lakes School District, approving the hire as part of a consent agenda by a 5-0 vote.
The motion to approve the consent agenda, which included Resolution No. 1285 appointing Voorhees, was made by Board member Scott Loia and seconded by Board member Kathryn D’Agostino. The minutes record board members Lisa Cardella, Kathryn D’Agostino, SeWhan Kim, Scott Loia and Ari Donio voting yes; four members were absent.
Resolution No. 1285 states Voorhees will serve for the 2024–25 school year at a prorated salary of $160,000, with an expected start on or around Sept. 25, 2024 and an end date of June 30, 2025. The appointment is expressly contingent on clearance of a Criminal History Records check and review of employment history regarding child abuse and misconduct. The resolution also includes the board’s customary 60-day termination clause.
The board authorized Superintendent Gregorio Maceri to apply to the Commissioner of Education on an emergent basis for approval of Voorhees’s employment for a period of up to three months pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:6-7.1c, pending the criminal-history check, and pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:6-7.7, pending review of employment history related to child abuse and misconduct.
During the public comment period a resident asked that the meeting agenda be attached to the original community email and raised concerns referring to a prior Special Education audit, the Director of Special Services and the elimination of the Supervisor of Special Services position. The minutes do not record further detail or a formal response to those concerns beyond brief board remarks later in the meeting.
Board members offered brief comments after the vote; Superintendent Maceri also commented about Special Services. The board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Aug. 27, 2024, at 7 p.m. The special meeting adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
