Florence 05 details stadium lights, track timing and security upgrades

District operations staff gave trustees a detailed facilities and safety briefing at the August board meeting, outlining construction and technology timelines and the district's plan to pursue grant funding for security and infrastructure upgrades.
The operations director (speaker 5) told the board the track contract with Geo Services requires work to begin no later than Sept. 5 and to be completed "no later than November 25." He said the construction manager believes additional features may be possible within the approved bid but the district will watch scope and costs.
Campus renovations completed or underway include a renovated JES media center, repainted JMS gym and lobby, new cafeteria digital signage and seating at JHS, new playground equipment at JES and plans to evaluate the JES gym floor for replacement. LED athletic lighting has been installed at Fletcher Stadium and two additional fields are expected to be done by the end of October.
On security, operations staff described new vestibules at JHS and JMS, more than 10 walk‑through weapon detectors at JHS, classroom door locks and access control that logs every swipe. "Every time somebody swipes, it's logged," the director said, noting the system is useful for both security and operational troubleshooting. The district plans to upgrade camera servers and video management software (VMS) and will apply for a South Carolina Safer Schools grant to offset that work.
The district also said it will pursue E‑rate funding for network and server replacements; the operations director said roughly $206,000 is in the district's current E‑rate budget and the district hired an E‑rate consultant to complete federal paperwork.
Why it matters: the projects address both facilities maintenance and student/staff safety. The combination of access‑control logging, vestibules and camera analytics is intended to reduce response time and improve incident review capability.
Board members asked operational questions including timing for moisture testing on a proposed synthetic gym floor and a public attendee raised a traffic safety concern about staff directing buses and cars at the middle school; staff said they will address vesting and traffic control procedures.
What's next: staff will proceed with contract mobilization for the track, continue LED and field work through October, and pursue Safer Schools and E‑rate funding for camera, server and access control upgrades.
