Westbury UFSD board recognizes student competitions; student urges better school appearance

The Westbury Union Free School District Board of Education on June 9 held a planning meeting that highlighted student recognitions across academics, culinary and arts programs and included a public comment urging improvements to school appearance.
Superintendent (name not stated) opened the meeting by thanking families, teachers and administrators for their work and by announcing district celebrations that included MathMania and the district’s STEAMFest. She introduced Dr. Watt, the district’s director for STEM, to present MathMania results and asked staff members to assist with certificates.
"MathMania is an experience for the children who compete, but it's an experience for all of the children who are also watching in the district," Dr. Watt said, describing the event’s classroom and schoolwide participation before announcing winners for kindergarten through fifth grade.
The board also recognized participants in a district "Chopped" competition, naming team leads and student competitors from multiple schools and thanking staff and external partners who supported the event. Elementary student artwork chosen for in-house social studies workbooks was announced and students were invited to receive certificates and be photographed with district leaders.
During public comment, Bridal Tercios, a student who said she was completing an assignment for an AP Spanish class, told the board she appreciated scholarship and program opportunities but urged improvements to the physical appearance of West Bay High School. "A clean and attractive school creates a better learning environment, increases school pride, and helps students feel more connected to their community," Bridal Tercios said, suggesting fresh paint, cleaner ceilings and more student artwork displayed throughout the building.
Chair Vice President Floyd Ewing and district staff thanked her for the feedback. The chair asked whether anyone else wished to speak; no additional public commenters addressed the agenda.
The board then voted to go into executive session to discuss personnel and negotiations. The motion to enter executive session was moved and seconded and passed unanimously; the chair said the session would last no longer than one hour and 15 minutes and that no votes would be taken on exiting the session.
The meeting concluded after the board returned from executive session and a motion to adjourn was approved.
Next steps: items discussed at the planning meeting will appear on the board’s formal agenda for the June 16 meeting, where the board may take formal votes on listed agenda items.
