The first amendment would expand summer coaching contact in most WIAA-sponsored sports by allowing extended coaching days during June and July (the proposal keeps a July 1–6 dead period and retains five contact days for football). The athletic director said the WIAA survey showed mixed responses—about 40% wanted no change, while 44% favored more days—and that the committee advanced the amendment to member schools for a vote.
"This amendment would expand the opportunities for coaching contact in all WIAA sponsored sports throughout the months of June and July," the athletic director said, noting football would remain at five contact days per guidance from the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association.
Board members and community representatives raised concerns about the proposal being an unfunded mandate for districts: administrators warned of added compensation and transportation costs, and parents and some board members cited player burnout and scheduling conflicts. One administrator characterized the change as effectively moving from a five-day limit to "unlimited" coaching contact, which could create inequities between districts with different resources and affect students who work during the summer.
The second amendment discussed would allow high-school athletes to pursue name-image-likeness (NIL) opportunities unrelated to their school or WIAA activities, with limits on who may be involved and restrictions on coach/administrator participation. Board members noted the potential for legislation to pre-empt the WIAA if the association does not act.
Board members provided informal feedback—several signaled they would lean against expanded summer contact while noting benefits like increased team bonding and preparation—and asked the athletic director to use that guidance when representing the district at the WIAA meeting. No board vote was taken on the amendments at the district meeting; the athletic director will vote at the WIAA annual meeting.
