The Winneconne Community School District board voted Oct. 7 to approve a new full-time academic support teacher position and to adopt a set of policy revisions recommended by the policy committee.
Administrators explained the district has had difficulty filling the former tutor role and proposed converting it into a teacher position to better serve at-risk high-school students and support graduation efforts. Administration said it can shift an existing teacher into the position if the board approves, describing the change as fiscally manageable.
A board member moved and a second approved the position; the motion and the revised job description passed by roll call. During discussion board members asked whether the role would support students with and without formal 504 plans; administrators said the position would work broadly with students in need and confirmed it is a full-year, full-time teacher role.
Separately the board reviewed multiple policy updates bundled for approval. Revisions included Policy 21-31 (educational outcome goals and expectations), updated to add language referencing Hmong Americans and Asian Americans consistent with 2023 Wisconsin Act 266; Policy 23-40 (district-sponsored trips) with added language on international trip approvals and a rescission of Policy 86-40; updates to substitute employment and certification language in the 31-20/41-20 series; and clarified compensation and nonrenewal language for coaching/advisory duties.
A board member moved to approve the package of policy revisions and the rescissions as presented; the board voted in favor. The presenting board member emphasized these were revisions to remain compliant with state statute rather than novel district policy initiatives and indicated implementation details will follow in administrative procedures.
The meeting concluded with routine communications and a motion to enter executive session under Wisconsin Statute 19.85 to discuss administrator evaluation and personnel matters.
