Doral council confirms Matthew Castillo as police chief; new chief pledges community focus

"I wanted to get a chance to know the community. That's what I'm big on. I'm big on community relations," Castillo said. He thanked Chief Edwin Lopez for his leadership and said he intends to build on the existing foundation rather than upend department priorities.
Vice Mayor Cabral and multiple councilmembers praised Castillo's credentials, management experience, and commitment to community trust. The manager noted the appointment was made after considering organizational needs, including upcoming public-safety priorities and major events; the manager also confirmed that Deputy Chief Neal will remain in the department and continue to play a leadership role.
The council moved and approved the employment agreement. The chief said he looks forward to meeting residents and working closely with Doral officers on traffic, community outreach, and public-safety priorities.
