Parent tells board child with IEP missed instruction; superintendent offers follow-up

A parent raised a detailed complaint during public comment, saying their child with an individualized education plan (IEP) lacked a specialized teacher for most of the trimester and that the teacher who returned was present for only about two-and-a-half weeks. The parent said report cards reflected failing marks in writing and other subjects and argued the child had been tested on material for which targeted instruction had not been provided.

"How is this fair to the kids with IEPs and kids in general to be tested for things that they haven't received training for?" the parent asked. The parent said the problem affected curriculum pacing and singled out writing instruction and science as areas that had been rushed before testing.

Superintendent Dr. Kravis said he could not comment publicly about individual students but advised the parent to contact the teacher or the child's case manager for specific interventions and explanations. He said he would reach out to building-level staff and follow up after speaking with them. "I know I will be reaching out to your child's teacher as a building-level tomorrow," he told the parent, and encouraged ongoing contact with the school for individualized solutions.

Board members and staff did not provide specific remediation steps at the meeting beyond the superintendent's commitment to follow up through the teacher and case manager. The board reiterated the importance of privacy and said individualized cases are handled outside the public meeting.
