The Hawaii County Committee on Governmental Operations and External Affairs on March 3 voted to forward Mayor Michael Alameda’s nomination of Edwin B. Guzman to the county Veterans Advisory Committee with a favorable recommendation to the full council.
The committee approved closing Communication 7 50 and forwarding the nomination by voice vote; the clerk recorded nine ayes. Alameda introduced Guzman and said the nominee would serve a term to expire Dec. 31, 2030.
Guzman told the committee he worked as a readjustment counselor in post‑traumatic stress disorder programs and described efforts to help combat veterans reintegrate into community life, including group activities and counseling. “That sacrifice is the rest of their life,” Guzman said, describing the long‑term effects he has treated among veterans.
Council members praised Guzman’s background. Council member Connie Lee Kleinfelder called Guzman “a perfect fit” and thanked him for his service, and other members offered support for small projects or contingency funds to assist veterans. Council member Onishi said he could raise committee requests with national veterans groups.
The committee’s favorable recommendation will be transmitted to the full Hawaii County Council for final confirmation. No public testimony was recorded for Communication 7 50 during the committee meeting.
