Board notes new state law requiring labor movement instruction for grades 6–12
Summary
During its Sept. 17 meeting the Green Township Board received a legislative update noting that on Sept. 3 the governor signed A-1682/S-1054 (P.L.2025, c.137), which requires instruction on U.S. and New Jersey labor history in grades 6–12; the NJSBA urged caution about expanding statutory curricular mandates.
At the Sept. 17 meeting the board’s legislative liaison, Mrs. Alyssa Eisner, updated trustees on recent state action affecting curriculum standards.
Mrs. Eisner summarized A-1682/S-1054 (P.L.2025, c.137), signed Sept. 3, 2025, which requires boards of education to include instruction on United States and New Jersey labor history and the contributions of the labor movement in grades 6–12 as part of districts' implementation of the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in social studies. The statute specifies topics to be included "at a minimum," such as the history of organized labor, notable strikes, unionization drives and the collective-bargaining process and existing legal workplace protections.
The New Jersey School Boards Association, in testimony during committee deliberations, expressed concerns the update said: the association urged caution about expanding the list of statutory curricular mandates and argued that decisions about curricula and pacing should rest with local boards, the Department of Education and the State Board of Education rather than the Legislature.
The board did not take action on the item at the Sept. 17 meeting; the legislative update was provided for information and context. Any changes to local curriculum or implementation timing would be scheduled through the district's curriculum committee and presented to the board for approval.
