Green Township board lists 2% tax-levy increase, retains courtesy busing and plans to defer $200,000 in Newton tuition

The Green Township Board of Education on March 3, 2025, discussed district budget pressures and listed four action items intended to address rising costs, including a 2% tax-levy increase.
Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Cenatiempo presented the budget workshop overview, describing state aid, a Chapter 44 adjustment and transportation options. The board and staff discussed courtesy busing, possible tiering or going out to bid for routes, and the district's send/receive relationship with Newton High School, which has increased tuition charges. As part of the workshop staff and board listed the following action items: take a 2% tax-levy increase; keep courtesy busing in the draft budget; defer $200,000 of Newton tuition costs to a later period; and pursue renegotiation of the Newton tuition contract.
Holly Roller of 2 Autumn Ridge Road spoke during public comment, urging the board to revisit transportation arrangements and consider "tiering options" or going out to bid for routes. "The board is up against financial challenges," Roller said, urging "creative solutions" and warning against repeatedly postponing transportation decisions.
The workshop did not record a formal roll-call vote adopting a final budget at the meeting; the list of action items was presented as workshop guidance for further budget development. Superintendent Dr. Cenatiempo also reported that there have been zero founded harassment, intimidation and bullying (HIB) incidents since the last meeting.
The board later moved into executive session to discuss pending or anticipated litigation and personnel matters and reconvened before adjourning at 9:30 p.m. Next scheduled meeting: March 12, 2025.
