Chair Louis Caruso said at the Feb. 5 Open Space Advisory Committee meeting that a parcel important to the County Connector Trail is "no longer for sale" and asked members whether the committee should pursue eminent domain to secure the trail corridor.
The committee agreed with Caruso’s proposal to explore the option. Caruso said he will contact The Land Conservancy of New Jersey to coordinate next steps. He also reported that neighboring Allamuchy has contacted the State and wants to proceed on its portion of the trail. Members discussed routing the trail through Tranquility Farms property as part of keeping the project connected.
The discussion was framed as preliminary direction rather than a formal action; no motion authorizing eminent domain was made or recorded in the minutes. Committee members approved routine meeting business at the same meeting, including excusing the absent member and approving the minutes, and then adjourned.
Next steps noted in the meeting: Caruso will reach out to the Land Conservancy of New Jersey and report back; the committee did not specify a timeline for any formal legal steps, and no property acquisition contract or condemnation hearing date was recorded.
