EPIC board adopts state-mandated AI policy and codifies technology access rules

At its June 15 meeting EPIC's board adopted an artificial-intelligence use policy required by new state law and approved several technology- and procurement-related policies clarifying inventory, essential technology, and learning fund rules.
Board member Mr. Webb introduced an artificial-intelligence (AI) use and restrictions policy tied to a new state law and said the board sought to "get in front of it" by adopting a local policy.
"This is a new state law that is going into effect," Mr. Webb said, describing the policy as a starting point that the board expects to expand. The board moved to approve the policy; Miss Casper recorded a "No" vote while remaining voting members supported adoption.
In related business the board approved revisions to the fixed-assets and inventories policy in response to a state charter board audit (including an annual inventory list and a five-year technology plan), a revised contracting-and-purchasing policy to codify finance operating procedures, and policies assuring essential technology (laptops and MiFi) will not be charged to students' learning funds.
Board members described the technology-related approvals as both compliant with audit recommendations and intended to ensure students have access to needed devices and internet connectivity. The motions were carried by roll call.
