Rolfe council tables law-enforcement contract, awards tree-removal work and approves local memberships

Rolfe — The City Council of Rolfe met June 9, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. at the community center and conducted routine business including tabling two items, approving municipal payments, and awarding a tree-removal contract.

Mayor Jim Pentico called the meeting to order and the council approved the consent agenda—which included agendas and minutes from May 12, May 28 and June 4—and the bills on a motion by Council member Aaron Cox, seconded by Council member Dan Allen; the minutes record the vote as 'all ayes.' The council also tabled a building-permit application for 515 Broad St. until the application is fully completed; that motion was similarly made by Cox and seconded by Allen.

Treasurer Sindergard presented the April Treasurer's report, which the council approved after a motion by Dan Allen, seconded by Aaron Cox. Separately, the council decided to postpone action on a law-enforcement contract because Sheriff Nelson was not present and council members want to clarify who will prepare the contract before voting.

Mayor Pentico reviewed bids for tree removal and said he had made the phone calls council requested; the council awarded the contract to Schwebach Tree Service (Company #5) on a Cox/Allen motion, recorded as 'all ayes.' The meeting record also notes the council approved the city’s annual membership in Rolfe Betterment, Inc. (motion by Cox, seconded by Rob Jackson), and agreed to split payment for the Keep Iowa Beautiful Hometown Pride Program with Hometown Pride covering half the cost and the city covering the other half (motion by Cox, seconded by Jackson). All votes in the minutes are noted as 'all ayes.'

During citizens' comments, Mary Allen raised concerns about the City of Rolfe Auditor Facebook page. Mayor Pentico also reported the city has more than $21,000 in nuisance-abatement fees to be collected from court rulings and relayed two recent citizen complaints—one about horse manure in the streets and another about a dog that killed a neighbor’s cat. The council heard an introduction of the Rolfe Public Library’s new director, Willa Casstevens, who began the role on June 2, 2025.

City payrolls, vendor bills and fund balances were included in the meeting record; the minutes attach detailed line items for payroll payments, vendor invoices and fund totals. Council members noted the municipal swimming pool remains under preparation and that no opening date has been set. Aaron Cox moved to adjourn at 5:53 p.m.; Dan Allen seconded and the motion carried.
