The Newton City Council on June 15 adopted revisions to the rules and fee schedule for Union Cemetery and Memorial Park Cemetery intended to ensure burials occur during daylight hours and to clarify operations.
The update shortens burial hours slightly (noted as a small change intended to prevent work in the dark), allows Sunday and holiday burials at the community development director’s discretion and at double the weekday rate, and removes a previously proposed late-arrival penalty fee after staff met with local funeral homes. Council members said staff had consulted funeral directors and that the removal of the penalty resolved prior objections.
A council member explained the new prohibition on spreading ashes on cemetery grounds reflects an Iowa state mandate that prohibits scattering ashes on public property, including cemeteries. Council also directed staff to correct typographical errors in draft language (noting the proper word is “interment” when referring to burial).
Council approved the resolution by roll call. Staff said the operational change should reduce safety concerns for crews performing burials in low-light conditions and allow director-approved exceptions when necessary for religious reasons.
