Newton council adopts second budget amendment for 2025–26

The Newton City Council on May 18 adopted a resolution approving the second amendment to the FY2025–2026 city budget to reflect changed and anticipated revenue and expenses through June 30, 2026.
The council opened a public hearing on the amendment, noting adjustments tied to federal and state grants, private donations, fire operating expenses, garbage services, a pavement patching project, library donations, Maytag pool repairs, legal services, bonding costs, airport projects and water pollution control work. Chair (speaker 2) said notice of the hearing was published on May 5, 2026, and that the amendment does not affect the property‑tax levy.
No members of the public spoke at the hearing. On a motion to close the public hearing moved and seconded by council members, the council closed the hearing and then voted to adopt the resolution to amend the budget. Clerk (speaker 5) conducted the roll call; the motion passed unanimously.
City staff said the amendment aligns internal program budgets with actual and anticipated activity through June 30, 2026. The council did not provide additional direction beyond standard review; the resolution will become part of the official FY2025–2026 budget documents.
