Township staff review proposed sign-ordinance amendments; board to consider changes ahead of July

Zoning Hearing Officer Chelsea Leiby presented proposed amendments to the Silver Spring Township sign ordinance at the Jan. 12 meeting, outlining draft changes that would add or revise setbacks for directional and freestanding signs, permit taller signs in some instances, expand categories of prohibited signage, and provide for limited exemptions.
Leiby said certain changes — especially those affecting shopping-center signage — present practical implementation challenges. Chairman Donald Franklin and Board Member Darrell McMillan referenced prior discussion on sign variances; McMillan suggested staff review historical variance requests to identify common requests and to assess whether proposed language would be overly restrictive.
Board Members James Hall, Ryan Siney, and Vice Chairman Richard Maffett reserved substantive comment pending further review of the draft amendments. Township staff indicated a target of forwarding the revised ordinance to the Board of Supervisors by about July 2026 for further consideration.
