Rochelle Park will replace SRO with SLEO Class III under interlocal agreement

The Rochelle Park Board of Education approved an interlocal agreement with the township to place a Special Law Enforcement Officer (SLEO) Class III at Midland School for the 2025–26 school year.
Superintendent Dr. Sue DeNobile told the board the district is transitioning from a school resource officer model to a SLEO Class III and said the change does not reduce school coverage. "I think what’s most important for the community to know in this change ... nothing changes about the services that Midland School and the district will receive with the SLEO Class III officer," DeNobile said. She said the Class III officer will be able to carry out the functions of a police officer and will be on site, with the district and township sharing selection and oversight.
Meeting materials note the officer is slated to begin in early January and that, if the assigned officer is unavailable, the township police department will provide a substitute officer. The finance agenda item F17 authorizes the interlocal agreement for the 2025–26 school year.
The board adopted the interlocal agreement as part of the finance motions. The action clarifies operational logistics (weapon check-out at the station, secure on-site storage) and the ongoing partnership between the district and township for school safety coverage.
