Residents tell Salem supervisors cement plant, excavation operations create safety, noise and air‑quality concerns

Several residents used the public‑comment portion of the Oct. 16 Salem Township meeting to press the board on industrial activity near residential areas.

Lisa Segina presented a petition signed by 28 neighbors asking the Supervisors to enforce developer obligations and to require developers to meet township requirements before proceeding. Segina asked that an Oct. 14 email from Linda Helman be entered into the record; the board entered the email into the minutes.

The Helman email, submitted by Linda and Gary Helman, described noise, air pollution and safety concerns tied to Daniels Cement Plant and Lutterman excavation. The letter said in part: "We are living a nightmare and losing property value at an alarming rate... [cement trucks] speeding down Route 819 in the middle of the road with no regard for other drivers... noise and air pollution at levels that are unacceptable to the families living around them." The Helmans asked for township action and suggested fencing and other mitigations.

Atty. Falatovich, the township solicitor, said the Township has sought to address the matters and "has brought Daniels through the Planning Process. We are in the middle of that. We are hoping to have as‑built plans soon. The deadline for submission is December 31, 2024." The meeting minutes record no enforcement action taken at the meeting; the Helmans' letter and the petition were entered into the public record.

Residents asked for further action on safety (particularly truck movements on Route 819), visibility, and noise‑control measures. The board did not set a timetable for additional hearings on the topic at the Oct. 16 meeting.
