Superintendent reports HVAC upgrades, athletic-site work and curriculum initiatives for upcoming school year

Dr. John Bell, the district superintendent, updated the Port Jervis City School District Board on facilities projects and academic planning during the board’s July meeting.
Bell said crews began middle-school construction immediately after graduation to install new HVAC systems so classrooms will have air conditioning; he said the high school will be scheduled for similar work next summer. Bell described extensive concrete work this season, including a planned pour for a 36-foot-by-72-foot outdoor fitness court, concrete pads for batting cages, locations for new bleachers and sidewalks to make the baseball and softball areas handicap accessible.
Bell also reported that a student trip to Europe is underway (18 students and three chaperones) and highlighted summer work on the district’s calendar and annual report, which he plans to present to the public around Sept. 1. The annual report will include building-level scorecards tracking multiple performance measures.
Why it matters The HVAC project will extend air conditioning to additional buildings over two summers and is intended to improve classroom conditions; the athletic and site work includes improvements to accessibility. The annual report and curriculum work set the district’s academic priorities for the year.
